While back-packing through SE Asia years ago, I first witnessed the use of "the miracle grass" by indigenous tribes and local communities throughout Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam.  I was impressed by the benefits bamboo provided to the environment , and in the creation of sustainable work for local communities.

My travels took me to Colombia where I discovered indigenous bamboo that was in many ways superior to the Asian species.  I saw first- hand the amazing structures made famous by Simon Velez, Marcelo Villegas and Joerg Stamm.  I met Joerg Stamm while standing on a bamboo bridge he built in Pereira, Colombia, and he kindly invited me to take a tour of the area. It turned out to be a tour that changed my life, and I spent the next four days with Joerg, driving in his Chevy Pick up truck through the “Eje Cafetero” region of Colombia.  For the first time I could see and touch the native stands of Guadua Angustifolia I had read about in "Tropcial Bamboo" and "New Bamboo" books of Marcelo Villegas.
